For 2006, yes, I was making about 'average' as a Mechanical Engineer. The problem is that we have had flat (1%) wage increases for the past 5 years at HP (I am ranked at the in the bottom of the top 20% in my section).
We are told that this is so HP is more in line with "industry standards", but then they are looking for the cream-of-the-crop. I used to put in quite a bit of extra time on projects but now keep myself to 40 hrs. They are 'standardizing' us into just another company...
