WebTrends

If you run your own blog or have a personal web site, you are probably familiar with Google Analytics. If you have ever worked with web sites for companies like Coca Cola, BMW, or Microsoft....you are probably more familiar with WebTrends. Matter of fact, if you are even a casual web surfer, I guarantee you probably have a cookie on your computer from a company using WebTrends software.

WebTrends is a darling of the dot-com boom. A big difference between them and the thousands of other companies tech companies that sprung up in the 90's is that WebTrends has a great product that provides value to the best known and often traditional companies we consume from everyday.

WebTrends was founded around 1993 and went public under the stock symbol WEBT in 1999. During the dot-com bust, they were purchased by NetIQ in 2001 only to become a private company again in 2005. Through all of these ownership ups and downs, Webtrends kept their headquarters right here in Portland and continued to make world-class software.

Now in private ownership with investment by Francisco Partners, Webtrends is rocking again and even looking at another, more successful, IPO in the coming years.

So what does this all mean to you? How about a great company to work at? A company that can weather the storm and come out stronger on the other side? How about an employer that counts the worlds most admired companies as its clients? A company that may very well make very wealthy people out of it's loyal employee's when it goes IPO again soon?

If you want to work for a company like that, check out the links below:

New RSS feed

Just a quick heads up that I have switched the RSS feed on this blog over to Feedburner. As I recently started using RSS feeds to keep track of all the blogs I follow, I discovered that Feedburner is the most simple and effective way to publish a feed.

So click the button on the right side bar, the button that looks just like this post picture above, and copy the resulting URL into your favorite RSS reader.

Personally, I use an RSS reader right in my Google Desktop Sidebar.

Government, Health, Education

In my last post, I joked about companies we take for granted. So on that note, I wanted to encourage you to look at some not-so-obvious places for employment in Portland.

These employers include the hospitals we go to in an emergency, the schools that educate us after high school, and the government agencies that support (or degrade, depending on how you look at it) our way of life.

Here are just a few examples of great places to look for a job:

OHSU- 347 full time jobs as of 9-17-07 including 6 in Finance, 34 in Mgmt/Admin
Portland State University- link provided is for "unclassified" positions.
Providence Health Systems- 206 positions in the Portland area (includes medical)
City of Portland- the "City that Works" or so they say
Oregon Public Employees Retirement System- located in Tigard

Happy job hunting!

Comcast

Sometimes we take things for granted. Like clean underwear or your cable and internet service. Next time you are looking for a job though, don't take utility companies for granted.

Comcast Corporation has a virtual monopoly of it's main service in the Portland area. They aren't resting on their laurels though, and they now offer home phone, internet, and new cellular service.

All that to say, it's probably not a bad place to work. In fact, I hear it is a great place to work. Sure, free or discounted tv, pay-per-view, high speed internet, and home phone service is nice. What I like though is that they are a major national corporation, traded on the NASDAQ market, but with a Beaverton office that only handles Oregon. It's like a small company within a big company. Did I mention they own a major NBA franchise and the E! channel? Now that would be a fun company picnic!

A recent review of their job's page shows 33 positions in the Portland area. They range from IT to finance to sales to customer service. They are even hiring for a VP position as we speak. So head on over to their site and do some research using the links below.

Happy Job Hunting.
