Schnitzer Steel Industries

If you have lived in Portland for more than a month, you have probably heard the name Schnitzer. There is the well known Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall (aka "the Schnitz), the Jordan Schnitzer Art Museum at the University of Oregon, and Harsch Investment Properties that owns more real estate around Portland than you care to know about.

Did you know though, that the Schnitzer Family is behind one of the 1,000 largest companies in the US, a 3,000+ employee company that was named as one of the best companies to work for in Oregon?

Schnitzer Steel is a 101 year old company with it's headquarters right here in the Rose City. They manufacture and recycle steel for customers all over the world. Matter of fact, the building boom in China has lead to a 700% increase in Schnitzer stock price over the last 5 years, and a 50% increase in the last year alone. Now who wouldn't want to work at a company like this?

At the time of this writing, Schnitzer Steel Industries (SSI) boasted 21 professional level positions, most in Portland. Check them out at the below links and become a part of their success!

Companies you won't read about on PDX Companies

There are two reasons that I will not write about certain notable employers in the Portland area. If there is a conflict of interest with my personal employer and/or if the company doesn't fit into my goal of exposing awesome employers in Portland that you haven't heard about.

Since you may still want links to these great employers, here you go:

  • Mentor Graphics: Headquartered in Wilsonville, over 4,000 employee's, and over $750m in sales
  • Sun Microsystems: They have a small office in Hillsboro. Many jobs at Sun can be based in any Sun office....including Hillsboro!
  • Intel: Duh...they employ over 14,000 in Oregon.
  • Synopsys: Though headquartered in Silicon Valley, they have over 300 positions in Hillsboro. The compete with Mentor Graphics.
  • Netflix: It's a call center in Hillsboro but every major office needs employee's in all types of management positions (including "Director of Customer Service" that they are hiring for now).
  • Adidas: You do know that their US Headquarters with approx 1,000 employees is in Portland, right?
  • Columbia Sportswear: Headquartered in Beaverton, 2800 employee's in total and about 700 at their HQ....and did I mention $1.2 billion in sales?
So give some of these a shot and I'll be back in a day or two to profile a single employer that you need to know about!

Now take a guess about what industry I currently work in and which one I used to work in!
